Unveiling Narrowboat Solmate's Electric Efficiency: A Tale of Two Journeys

Discover the remarkable power and efficiency of electric boating with Solmate. A vessel equipped with a 15kW motor with 143nm of torque, and a 1.8kW solar array. This electric narrowboat case study details two contrasting voyages that redefine expectations for electric propulsion.

Journey 1: Tidal Thames Dash – Hampton Court to Limehouse Basin

In summer 2025, Solmate swiftly navigated the Tidal Thames, completing the journey from Hampton Court, passing through Teddington Lock, to Limehouse Basin in under four and a half hours.

This impressive feat (sum of 24hrs) consumed only 19.3kWh from the battery, with 6.8kW simultaneously harvested from the solar panels.  Moreover all without the need for a generator or plugging into the shore. Accordingly this trip highlights the immediate power and responsiveness of a well-designed electric propulsion system for demanding conditions.

But that’s not all, please note that Solmate beat the diesel narrowboat that share the locks by 30 mins to Limehouse Basin.

Journey 2: 263km Solar-Powered Odyssey – Pyrford to Bristol

In stark contrast is a previous 21-day expedition from Pyrford to Bristol covered 263km, relying solely on solar power. Between June 11th and July 2nd, Solmate consumed 137kWh while generating 121kWh from the sun. Markedly, these numbers include house needs, water heating, cooking etc.

This journey demonstrates the true potential of sustained, off-grid electric travel, proving that long distances are achievable with efficient solar integration.

The Secret to Solmate's Success: Törkmar Motors and Advanced Solar

In this electric narrowboat case study we find out what makes these extraordinary trips possible? The answer lies in the synergy of cutting-edge technology:

  • Törkmar Motors: While a premium investment, Törkmar motors offer unparalleled torque ratings. Solmate’s 15kW Törkmar motor, combined with a 20” x 14” hyperform 3-blade propeller, is a critical component. Even at a maximum of 500rpm on the Thames trip, the propeller’s efficiency was evident.
  • High-Quality Solar Panels: The fitted solar panels are engineered for superior performance. They collect power through a refracting surface throughout the day and resisting heat-induced efficiency loss. These reliable panels ensure consistent energy harvesting.

Experience the Future of Boating

These real-world examples shatter misconceptions about electric motor capabilities. If you’re seeking exceptional power, efficiency, and the ability to travel with minimal environmental impact, Solmate’s journeys offer compelling proof.
