Generator to RCBO Wiring

Connecting the AC generator to your Victron Quattro (or similar inverter/charger) starts with the correct safety components. From the generator, the 6mm2 3-core cable (Live, Neutral, Earth) must first connect to a dedicated RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection). This RCBO provides essential protection against both short circuits/overloads and earth leakage faults.1

Enclosure Placement and Shore Power

The RCBO is housed within an enclosure, which is best positioned in the engine room. This enclosure can also hold the RCBO for your shore charging connection, keeping all primary AC safety breakers in one place. Crucially, the enclosure should be mounted with easy access when the engine room hatch is opened. This allows for immediate resetting of the breaker should it trip while the generator or shore power is in use, minimising downtime.

Final Connection to the Quattro

From the generator’s dedicated RCBO, the 6mm2 cable continues its run directly to the AC input terminals of the Victron Quattro (AC-in 1). When making this final connection, and all connections, remember to use the provided ferrules. These ensure a robust, secure, and professional cable termination by preventing splaying of the wire strands, which is vital for safety and long-term reliability in a high-vibration environment like a boat or vehicle.2 Correct wiring ensures the Quattro can seamlessly accept and convert the generator’s power to charge the battery bank.
