We use a high-precision shunt to measure the State of Charge (SOC) of your battery bank. By fixing the shunt directly to the negative battery cable, the system captures exactly how much electricity flows in and out. Consequently, this provides a real-time, accurate view of the remaining power levels for everyone on board.

Maintaining Accuracy Over Time

While shunts provide valuable data, a principle known as Peukert’s Law means these readings are technically estimates. Over time, the SOC figure can “drift” and give a false result. Therefore, it is recommended to reset the shunt every two weeks by charging the batteries to 100% via a shoreline connection.

Once the batteries reach full capacity, the shunt automatically resets itself to ensure the data remains reliable for all users. This process is especially essential for “non reporting” batteries, such as 2V lead carbon cells. Ultimately, following this simple routine keeps the Törkmar system running perfectly and ensures power readings stay precise for the whole crew.
