Monitoring Your Battery’s Health
We use a shunt to measure the State of Charge (SOC) of your battery. The shunt is a device fixed to the negative battery cable that precisely captures the amount of electricity going in and out of the battery.
Smart Monitoring
This shunt is smart, meaning you can read and adjust its settings wirelessly using the Victron Connect app via Bluetooth. It connects to the wider boat system, such as an Ekrano, using a VE.Direct cable. The shunt itself is powered by a 24V feed from the DC distribution system.
Keeping Readings Accurate
While shunts provide valuable data, a principle known as Peukert’s Law suggests this method is only a rough estimate, and over time, the SOC reading can drift, giving a false result. To correct this, we recommend resetting the shunt every two weeks by charging the battery to 100% using a shoreline connection. The shunt will automatically reset at this point. This system is used with ‘dumb’ batteries, like 2V lead carbon batteries.
